Abstract

Ship collisions pose a significant risk to maritime safety, human life and the environment. To reduce this risk, there is an urgent need to develop and use advanced systems and technologies that help navigators of modern ships make effective decisions and avoid situations of excessive proximity. One of such systems is a collision avoidance system using the Open Sea Model (OSM), which is a dynamic representation of the marine environment, including information about the movement parameters of target vessels in real time. This article provides an overview of modeling-based ship collision avoidance systems, discussing their components, methodology, and advantages. The need to develop and implement ship collision prevention systems and the negative impact of potential collision consequences are emphasized. The main components of the system, including data collection and preliminary processing, are considered. The development of such models is discussed, their role in representing and visualizing the marine environment and its nature in real time is emphasized. The methodology for assessing the risk of collision, calculation of vessel movement parameters, such as the closest point of convergence and potential collision courses, is presented. The decision-making process for avoiding a collision is described, including the generation of alerts, warnings, and recommended actions. In addition, the article discusses the development of a user interface that visualizes the high seas model, improving user interaction and situational awareness. The importance of integrating the system with the ship's navigation equipment is also emphasized. However, the complexity of the process of implementing ship collision avoidance systems and the need to comply with maritime safety rules and regulations, expert assessment and compliance with industry standards to ensure an effective and legally compliant system are stressed. In general, the use of collision avoidance systems provides vessel crews with a powerful tool for assessing collision risks, making informed decisions and improving maritime safety in real time and using advanced methodologies to help minimize the potential consequences of a collision and protect human life, property and the environment.
